Canton
Divison
Construction Day 1
9 October 2006
Construction Started on the Benchwork today for the Canton Division. Some measurement miscalculations were discovered during benchwork construction. This is common and has not stressed me out too bad. That being said, some decisions in regards to the benchwork need to be made. Once the benchwork is completed, Layout plan 7.3 will be completed. If the changes are drastic (likely) then a entire new layout plan (8.0) will be created. Moral of story......quadruple check your measurements!! :). Another challenge is the joy of bending timber. I swear the lumber has developed some new bends and twists since I purchased it one week ago....I have been able to work through it. All in all, I wont say this is easy but it is not rocket science either. The floor is not even close to even as well which has posed some interesting challenges. I am not too concerned if the benchwork is not dead on even....after all the last time I checked, the real world is indeed not flat :)

Yes that is yours truly sitting on the floor trying to figure out this monster I
am building. The CEO (wife) took the photo
Below are some additional photos of the work in progress:

That support column in the photo below is the source of the calculation error. For some reason, I measured from the outside edge instead of the inside edge thus throwing me off about 6" This is one of a couple of measurement errors encountered. This one is the most drastic though.....so far :)

That pesky support column again....hmmmm I wonder if I could
just bore a tunnel in it (I am kidding)
I am thinking of moving the benchwork pictured to the other side of the column.
This may allow me to build the return loop just to the right of this
photo. Stay tuned :)

The picuture below is command central for the Canton Division. This is where most of the layout will be controlled from (hence the PC). This is also where the DCC Command Stations will be installed. Also, this is where everything is being stored during construction. (this is not my main computer....all of that mess is on the other end of the basement.)
